Abstract:
The site was used for iron smelting and smithing from late 8th to early 9th century. In the last of at least three phases of industrial structures an innovatory 'developed bowl' furnace with slag-tapping facilities was introduced. Iron ore was brought some distance to the site, which may have been on a royal estate. Specialist reports on pottery, animal bones, metalwork, Eifel querns etc. D G
