Abstract:		 Dating evidence recovered from new excavation in and around the original findspot, the context, date and provenance of the baluster column with an inscription in Ogham, which was recovered in 1893 during the excavation of the Roman town at Silchester, Hampshire, are reconsidered. A fourth- or fifth-century date is proposed and the find provides a new early Celtic name, important support for certain stylistic developments in early Ogham, new information on the role of the Irish in Late Roman Britain as well as evidence for life and death in Late Roman Britain.
