Abstract:
It is stated that the later medieval domestic house plan did not emerge from the longhouse, rather the longhouse is a regional variant of the later domestic plan. Further, it is thought that the origins of the plan do not lie in developments in building structure -- types of twelfth-century building plan are now known and show that these plans were used at an early stage. By the mid-thirteenth century excavated evidence and standing buildings show that the plan was becoming widely adopted and that space was divided up by the position of the main posts.
