Abstract:
Examination of deposits such as peat and alluvium on the northern edge of the Bermondsey eyot at 211 Long Lane, Southwark, provided the opportunity to define the area's past topography and geoarchaeology, and examine issues of human settlement patterns and exploitation. The report, the first of two parts, discusses the peat and floodplain deposits in terms of the geology and palaeogeography; prehistoric activity in the vicinity; excavated evidence of the geotopography and the Neckinger floodplain; and life and the environment on the eyot edge.
