Article describing archaeological work carried out before and during development of 8--22 Smithfield Street and 30--38 Hosier Lane. A range of evidence was found including Roman rubbish pits and evidence indicating Roman burials nearby; rubbish and cess pits with a range of dates from the early medieval period through to the seventeenth century; gravel quarrying dating from the late-thirteenth through to fifteenth centuries; and post-medieval structural features, including cellars.
