Abstract:
Reports on two excavations at Shap and Brougham. At Shap evidence of an earth-fast timber building of unknown function which measured 9.5m by 4.8m was revealed. The structure probably dates from the seventh or eighth centuries AD. The excavation at Brougham revealed four conjectural rectangular post-built timber buildings. A lack of finds associated with the occupation has led to the interpretation that the site probably dates from the Anglo-Saxon period. Includes separately authored reports on:
