Abstract:
Note concerning an anomalous feature at the site of the Hadrian's Wall fort of Birdoswald. Excavations were undertaken during 1996 following damage to the site by cliff-edge erosion. In one area a cist was found, the stone lining of which was markedly different from other (Roman) stonework found on the site. There were indications that the feature had been disturbed in the past, and no finds were made from the cist fill that were earlier than Roman in date. Identification of the feature as possibly prehistoric in date is based primarily on the character of the stonework. The feature is discussed in relation to similar cists in northern England and Scotland. Includes
