Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A survey of the course and present state of the Roman road across the Wrynose and Hardknott passes was undertaken following a request from the Lakeland Preservation Society, instigated by proposals for tree-planting. The central sector of the length examined contained well-preserved and almost continuous remains of the road, as later activity in the area had been pastoral rather than agricultural. From Ambleside to the Pedder Stone and from Butterilket to Ravenglass agriculture had been widespread and intensive and there was little to see of the road. The three sectors are described in detail, before some general observations are made on the construction of the road and its strategic importance. It is concluded that the scale and careful engineering of this remote road through the mountains accord with logical expectation. LD | |||
