Abstract:
SD 141989. Excavation of the site of the bloomery built in Eskdale, Cumberland by William Wright and William Pennington in 1636-7 showed that local ore was smelted using water-power for bellows and hammer. The head race and its sluice-gate were the most clearly-surviving features, but enough remained of the channel alongside the bloomery site to estimate the sizes and power of the water wheels. Although the hearths had been destroyed, furnace bottoms of slag to which some iron adhered gave a fair indication of the process and product in the middle of the 17th century. Later, but probably before the 1720s, the furnaces were lined with cast iron plates. D W C
