Abstract:
NY 460266. A study of the iconography of this 10th-century cross suggests that the upper scene shows the sacrifice of Isaac and that there is a similar arrangement at Breedon. Patristic and Anglo-Saxon sources indicate that the Isaac sacrifice was a 'type' of Christ's Redemption and this explains its links with a Fall scene at Dacre, Breedon and Newent. The 'hart and hound' motif, in the Dacre context, is probably a symbol of Christ's crucifixion: the origin, date and distribution of this motif are examined in an appendix. R N B (au)
