Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A report on evidence from two watching briefs in advance, and during the early stages of, road construction. `A watching brief in field OS 4369' by R H Leech (51--3) outlines features and finds from a two day excavation undertaken in the wake of a pipe trench cutting waterlogged Roman deposits. The results indicated two building periods for the vicus north of the fort, probably of first- and second-century date. `The watching brief in advance of road construction' by R H Leech & D Scott (53--6) describes work between Rothay Road and Barrows Road which observed more structural features east and west of the road, in a necessarily less detailed exercise. The finds from both watching briefs included pottery, and there are reports on `The samian' by B H Hartley & Brenda Dickinson (56 & 58--60), and `The mortaria' by K Hartley & L M Hird (60--2). Also noted are a gold bracelet, lead objects, wood objects, and pieces of leather including parts of two composite shoe soles. There is also a note on `The coins from Ambleside' by D C A Shotter (66 & 68). | |||||||||||
