TL 663754. The earliest known scabbard remains of the British MBA appear on a rapier of Lisburn type recently found during ploughing. The low-set rivets of the rapier place it in a localised sub-group, probably of 11th cent BC. The scabbard was of flat hazel laths held together by strips of sheet bronze or copper and glued rather than pinned. The hilt has not survived, and the lack of hiltmark suggests the weapon was lost or buried in its scabbard while still quite new. | |||
