Centred on TL 710883. Two large cropmark-complexes in the Fenlands produced mainly Roman material when excavated. Site 7088/1 had Neolithic-EBA remains and an enclosure of ?Roman date. 7088/2 was a Roman road and ditch system with occupation material suggesting farm outbuildings. On Site 7188/1 an Iron Age pit contained bones and pottery; later occupation material associated with Roman ditches included an heirloom collection of fine samian Site 7188/b produced a long-necked beaker and Antonine settlement roads with abutting structural traces. Coarse pottery and a little samian came from the road-ditches. Persistent waterlogging probably forced final abandonment of the site. The forty acres of Site 7188 may represent a settlement related to the villa suspected near 7088, but the lack of coins and the relative scarcity of small finds suggest a low economic level. Cattle and sheep were numerous, and a coulter indicates some arable cultivation. Mollusca and plant remains are also discussed. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
