Abstract:
The results of twenty years monitoring of the destructive ploughing of archaeological sites in the middle Nene Valley are presented. Pottery sherd numbers, sherd distal length measurements, pottery movement within the soil and estimates of the `volume' of destruction calculated by the increased weight of pottery within the soil are also analysed and discussed. Comment is also made on the effects of the applications of agricultural chemical fertilisers as a cause for the weathering of pottery within the soil. The results of this study indicate that deep ploughing continues to pose a major threat to the destruction of sites and that this destruction can be quantified.
