Abstract:
An article focussing on this ancient administrative division of ten `dark peak' hamlets within the royal forest. It was found that there was a very close correlation between the seventeenth-century apportionments and later enclosures, both regarding boundaries and acreage. Fieldwork confirmed that a high degree of evidence for the divisions and enclosures is still extant (and it is noted that this also relates to the geological structure and physical nature of the ground). In addition, the boundaries with the ancient farmlands and freehold properties which occupied choice locations within or on the edge of commons can still be identified. The authors note the high degree of accuracy of seventeenth-century maps and surveyors.
