Abstract:
Report on archaeological investigations, including trial-trenching and excavation, undertaken during 2003-4 at King Street, Derby, in advance of residential development. The earliest Phase 1 activity pre-dated 1150, and comprised a group of pits, a post-hole alignment and a cluster of hearths. It is possible that these features were associated with clothmaking undertaken adjoining the church of St Alkmund. In the medieval/early post-medieval period the area was mainly given over to cultivation, although traces of a single north--south boundary, and adjoining pitting, survive. Industrial activity resumed on the site in the seventeenth or eighteenth century, as indicated by a group of pits, one of which contained fragments of spun fibres and hops. In the nineteenth century the area contained a brick outbuilding, mapped in 1852, used for an industrial purpose. Separately authored contributions include
