Abstract:		 Article on the character of the medieval buildings of Chester. An introduction notes that very little remains of any Roman, Saxon or Norman buildings and rejects the idea of a Roman origin for the Rows. Possible reasons for their establishment are then discussed, using comparisons with elements of medieval architecture. Medieval character is then discussed further, using examples of surviving fabric and evidence from drawings of buildings that are no longer standing. The architecture of the city's medieval crypts is described, including the various methods of vaulting used. It has been suggested that at least one of the crypts had a religious purpose; this idea is rejected. LD
