Abstract:		 Historical account and description of Chester Castle, which originated as a fortified enclosure prior to AD 907. Includes discussion of recent alterations and works, such as the clearing out of the chapel in the tower in 1921, and restoration of 'A' block, originally built in 1809-10. Masons' marks discovered during restoration of the tower are illustrated and the remains of wall paintings in the chapel are described. A bricked-up doorway and a passage were found during excavations on the east side of 'A' block. LD
