Abstract:		 [SJ 4066]. Further exploration of the Roman defences also revealed traces of an apparently Saxon refortification of the town. In the Roman period, two phases of stone defences, Trajanic and Constantian, were seen; ovens behind the rampart were in use up to c AD 120, but a ?store building continued probably to the end of 2nd century. The post-Roman defences consisted of a masonry platform with ditch outside (?gateway), while further along was a ?palisade trench. This phase is not well dated, but there is ample coin evidence in the town for a reoccupation early in 10th century, and some pottery reinforces this. It is likely that the defences were Aethelflaed's, adapted from the ruined Roman walls. Medieval and post-medieval features, including a lime-kiln, were also examined; pottery of Roman, Late Saxon and medieval periods and small finds are catalogued.
