Abstract:
Article examining the importance of interpreting castles in the context of their wider landscapes. Beeston Castle, dating to the 13th century and situated ten miles east of Chester, is described. An overview of the evolution of castle studies in recent years is then given. The powers of Ranulf de Blundeville, the builder of Beeston Castle, are discussed and two of the other castles built by him are examined. An appreciation of the wider impact of power on the landscape highlights many aspects of Beeston Castle's significance. LD
