Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
A re-dating of a samian fragment and a new reading of a lost centurial stone suggest that the Intermediate Stone Wall might be Hadrianic. The fragment, from MC 79 and originally dated not before 150, could on grounds of style have been made before 140. It cannot therefore suggest that the milecastle was not replaced in stone until later than Hadrian. The potter CETTUS, attested at Mumrills and previously dated 185+, can now be dated c 135 to 140-160, and D ... (Milking Gap) to c 115 to 120-140. There are grounds for believing that a lost centurial stone from the Intermediate Wall would link work there with work by the same centurion in both Broad and Narrow Wall sectors, creating a strong presumption of a Hadrianic date for the Intermediate Wall.
