[NZ 1167]. Reconnaissance excavation of the barracks area revealed a burnt ?Hadrianic and Antonine phase followed by a second phase, as yet undated, which eventually fell into ruin. Late 4th century wares attested renewed occupation, as at Halton Chesters. Under the barracks and roadway plough-marks gave evidence of short-lived ridge-and-furrow systems changing direction more than once. This, with the evidence from three other sites, implies fairly widespread arable farming on clay soils in Northumberland just before the Romans came. | ||
