Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
[NZ 4735]. This is a study of an early estate represented by the village of Hart and its neighbourhood. Few relevant documents survive but there are sufficient to show the descent of the manor and to hint at the use of the land, the demesne acreage and the inter-relationship of the constituent settlements. The subsoil is unresponsive to aerial photography but systematic fieldwork has located a deserted settlement (Nelson). The excavation of threatened sites in the village would be worthwhile. The manor house adjacent to Hart church, excavated by Parsons, was occupied from late Saxon times to the 16th century, when it was given over to farm buildings. Successive alterations and rebuildings of the house, and the associated medieval pottery, are fully described. HEJLP | ||
