NZ 345366. A detailed study of the iconography of this Romanesque cross suggests that its scenes should be read from bottom to top, an order which reflects the increasing profusion of ornament. This gives a sequence of: 1) Invention of the True Cross; 2) Helena and Constantine; 3) Constantine's Dream. The sources of the carving cannot be found in earlier Northumbrian sculpture and much of the foliate decoration derives from the Durham Carilef books. R N B | ||
