NY 935640. Excavations over the eastern part of the 7th century crypt revealed an E-W wall which bridged the southerly leg of the S passage and was contemporary with it; the passage thus emerged outside the main body of the church. The new wall, later incorporated into medieval paving and the screen platform, was set on foundation 'j' of earlier accounts. The crypt was built in a large hole, whose eastern edge lies below the present crossing, and was backfilled against the rising walls. The eastern end of the main chamber was protected and supported by massive mortared buttressing. Au(adp) | ||
