Abstract: A brief history of the Carr, including the 1890 discovery of a hoard of bronze kitchen vessels from the Roman camp, is followed by details of its value as a common and wildlife habitat. Early attempts at drainage, from the medieval onwards, and its final draining and enclosure in the nineteenth century are described.
