Abstract: This paper looks at the evidence for the spacing and location of milecastles and turrets from Wallsend to milecastle 9. A model is proposed to demonstrate how these structures can fit into a coherent scheme. This model indicates that the wall was originally designed to terminate on the river at Wallsend, although certain structures between milecastles 7 and 10 were not built until after the decision to narrow the wall.
