Abstract:
Considers the meaning of the two Roman place-names. Suggests that Vindovala (the Roman fort of Rudchester, Northumberland) could be interpreted as meaning `white walls', while Nemetovala (the hillfort and temple at Lydney Park, Gloucestershire) could have meant `walls of the sacred grove, sanctuary walls'.
