Excavations at a coastal site revealed evidence for a substantial Mesolithic settlement and a Bronze Age cist cemetery. Twenty-one radiocarbon determinations indicate that the Mesolithic site dates to the early eighth millennium BP. A core of sediment from stream deposits adjacent to the site provides information on local environmental conditions. The Mesolithic site included a substantial circular structure as well as pit and scoop features. Finds included a considerable quantity of flints including a variety of tools, and marine mollusc material. The Bronze Age cemetery consisted of five cists, one of which contained what appear to be skull fragments. Some pottery fragments, smoothed cobbles and lumps of ochre were also found . | ||
