Abstract:
A programme of fieldwalking and woodland inspection carried out between 1985 and 1989 shed light on the changing pattern of early settlement and land-use within the Tillingborne valley. A 1km wide transect across the greensand lithologies provided a sample that can be cross-checked and used for comparison elsewhere. The Tillingbourne valley is shown to have been an important focal point for settlement throughout the past and while prehistoric activity is seen to be wide ranging across the landscape, that of the Roman and later periods is more nucleated.
