The discovery of a Roman inscription in Chichester in 1723 occasioned a great deal of excitement in antiquarian circles and many antiquarians visited the stone and described their findings. Most of the subsequent literature has been concerned with the precise wording on the inscription. This paper is concerned with the actual stone and its history after its discovery. It chronicles its rescue by the 2nd Duke of Richmond, its exhibition at Goodwood, the visits of a number of antiquarians and its subsequent return and final resting place a stone’s throw from where it was discovered. | ||||||
