Abstract:
An iron ring set with a fine red jasper intaglio, found during river-dredging just outside the W gate of Venta Icenorum, bears a design of three conjoined profile heads and the letters C, E, N. The nearest British parallel is the Cocidius intaglio from Wall, Northumberland. The treatment of the features cannot be matched in the classical world but is well paralleled on Celtic coins from, eg, Armorica and the Iceni; the stiff pigtail of hair and the wheat-ear or palm-branch motif are also typically Celtic. The river find-spot, the sacredness of the head to the Celts and the triple form all point to the votive nature of the find. A certain ambiguity in the design allows the inscription to be read as ICEN, which would agree well with the location of the find in Icenian territory.
