Abstract:
TG 197269. A dispersed smith's hoard (a dozen socketed axes, two "half-hollow" spearheads and a barbed one, a bronze flanged disc, Ewart Park sword and rapier fragments, a socketed hammer and ingot fragments) was found in 1968 on a new housing estate. Good parallels for most of these occur in East Anglian hoards. Most of the axes exhibit casting flaws and generally are of poor workmanship. One spearhead socket contained the rare moss Schistostega and fragments of a herbaceous plant. Few comparable flanged discs occur in Britain (Horsehope and Isleham): axle caps or yoke fittings are the most likely explanations. The mature Hallstatt C influences indicate a date of c 650 BC.
