Abstract:
[TF 9872/4]. Ninety thousand square feet have now been examined. The structures dating to AD 650-850 show a controlled arrangement which suggests a cathedral community. For the period 850-1000, a group of large halls round a courtyard suggests a bishop's palace, abandoned after 1000 in favour of a new site, perhaps to N of the (new) stone cathedral. Growth of the local population is reflected in the cemetery of 200 graves. For the period 1050-1125, Building A is now known to precede Building T, and a lime-kiln has been examined. A summary of the animal bone evidence shows a Middle Saxon economy based on wool-production with a high standard of animal husbandry.
