Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Report on an archaeological excavation in 2003 in advance of the redevelopment of a former garage site on Red Lion Street, Aylsham. Evaluation trenching the previous year had shown that several ditches (then thought to be of prehistoric date) and the remains of medieval buildings survived along the street frontage. The excavation uncovered numerous archaeological features including the ditches, which appeared rather to be of Romano-British origin, medieval buildings, pits and post-holes, a hollow way (a predecessor of Blofield's Loke at the northern edge of the site) and a series of post-medieval cellars to two inns built on the site during the fifteenth or sixteenth centuries.
