Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Fieldwalking and limited test-pitting around the head of a small tributary valley near the coast at Penpant, Solva, north Pembrokeshire, has amassed a collection of more than 28,000 lithic items. The typological composition of this material is summarised and, despite an absence of stratigraphy or absolute dating, is attributed to successive periods of activity from the Early Mesolithic (c. 8400 cal. BC) until the early Bronze Age (c. 2500 cal. BC). The collection is considered in relation to its wider regional context especially during the later Mesolithic when it is just one instance of a remarkable clustering of activity on or near the coast, a widespread phenomenon in Wales and elsewhere that has long provoked speculation. Whilst a detailed familiarity with such scatters at the surface is all very well the level of information obtained remains highly constrained — a situation that will only change once well stratified deposits accompanied by appropriate levels of organic survival can be discovered, excavated and scientifically analysed. |
