Abstract:
Beyond the accounts contained in Welsh chronicles, little is known of the early military campaigns of Llywelyn ab Iorwerth. Two references in the poetry of Llywarch ap Llywelyn, otherwise known as Prydydd y Moch (fl. 1173–c. 1220), to an attack by Llywelyn ab Iorwerth on Ellesmere are therefore worthy of further scrutiny, as history records no such attack. Close examination of the history of the manor of Ellesmere as well as the diplomacy of Llywelyn and King John enable us to suggest two occasions on which such an attack was politically feasible, namely Llywelyn’s campaign of mid-1212, and his campaign during the spring of 1215 that culminated in the capture of Shrewsbury. Based on internal evidence supported by references in English administrative documents, it is postulated that both poems were written after mid-1212, and that the awdl known as the Canu Mawr may have been composed as late as 1215.
