Abstract:
Compared with England, Wales is relatively well-endowed with churches in which substantial elements of their original rood lofts remain in place. Wales is also fortunate in that its churches attracted the interest of a handful of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century antiquarians and travellers who, among them, visited virtually every church in the country and recorded what they found. It is largely from their accounts that the gazetteer and map which accompany the article have been compiled. The article looks at the original purposes for which rood lofts were constructed then examines the main sources of attack upon them, from the Reformation to the near present. The final sections consider possible reasons for the persistence of rood lofts in Wales. Is it a story of defiance, indifference, remoteness from scrutiny, the power of local patrons, poverty, pride, inertia, or a mixture of some or all of these?
