Abstract:
The pit alignment at Briar Hill Farm, Northampton, revealed during housing construction, proved to be at least 150m long. A double row of small pits or post holes had been succeeded by a row of regularly spaced large rectangular pits which had silted naturally; all finds were residual. The pit alignment at Park Lodge Quarry, Gretton was at least 114m long, terminating on a deep ditch; the 40 rectangular pits were refilled after primary silt had accumulated. A hoard of about 48 sword-shaped currency bars lay over a pit; other finds included a bronze ring-headed pin and an early Iron Age pot with fingernail impressions on the shoulder. Traces of Roman iron-working were seen. Appended are lists of excavated pit alignments and of Northamptonshire alignments seen on air photographs.
