Abstract:
Born into a large naval family at Portsea in Hampshire, Thomas King was one of eight children who were distinguished in the navy and the arts. Patronised by Bishop Buckner, he spent nearly all his working life in the city of Chichester, where he practised as the city’s most significant engraver in the first half of the 19th century. He illustrated the antiquities of western Sussex and of neighbouring Hampshire and was especially noted for his drawings of monumental brasses and tombs and for recording the antiquities of Chichester cathedral. His surviving engravings are a record of the archaeological excavations carried out in the western half of the county during his time. This paper chronicles his life in Chichester, his artistic recording of Chichester Cathedral and his antiquarian work; makes the first attempt to identify his published engravings and his book illustrations; and discusses his contributions in archaeological, artistic and historical fields
