Abstract:		 This paper considers the likely numerical strength and geographic distribution of the Roman Catholics in Sussex and offers an explanation of the distribution pattern. A comprehensive study of the Sussex Catholics in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries is long overdue but this limited study may be helpful in the meantime particularly to local historians who wish to examine the aspect of religious dissent in their areas of study.
