Abstract:		 A field walking project by the Wealden Iron Research Group to assess the situation and density of bloomery furnace sites in a given study area in the Weald is described. This was followed by the simple excavation of a number of selected bloomery slag heaps in the hope of recovering dateable pottery. The majority of the sampled sites turned out to be Romano-British.
