Abstract:
The disappearance of the Fellowship from the formal record of town government in Lewes, during and after the 16 70s, has been noted in passing by previous local historians. This article seeks to set that disappearance in the wider context of the sectarian and political divisions occurring within the county town at the time. In particular the consolidation of a new civic elite, quite distinct in its composition from that of the redundant Fellowship, is seen as marking the emergence of a Tory party in the Borough.
