Abstract:
This article discusses the events which occurred during the attempt to introduce the 1848 Public Health Act into the borough of Hastings. The Act's supporters believed that failure to adopt it would jeopardize the town's reputation as a high-class resort but its opponents, led by Alfred Burton, strove to exempt the township of St. Leonards from the easure on the grounds of expense and of loss of local autonomy. The paper considers the motives of the opposing parties in the struggle and the networks, local and national which were exploited to prosecute it.
