Abstract:
Steyning is fortunate in possessing a fine collection of 236 probate inventories, most of them with associated wills. These, together with other contemporary documents, reveal hitherto undiscovered information on the trades, occupations and home lives of the people of Steyning from Elizabethan times to the reign of George III. In particular, a portrait gallery of Steyning tradesmen has emerged, men and women who lived and worked in many of the extant timber-framed buildings of the town. Little modern documentary research on Steyning has appeared since the work of the Reverend Ernest Cox, a former vicar of Steyning. Mr Cox produced a monthly series of historical articles based upon material held at that time in the parish chest. These appeared in the parish magazine throughout the 1920s and 1930s. What follows is the first comprehensive post-war study of the early modern town and its trades to be based upon documentary sources.
