Abstract:
Although all discussion of politics was forbidden in the Lit and Phil, its library houses portraits of Earl Grey, the Whig Prime Minister, Lord Brougham, his Lord Chancellor, and the Duke of Sussex, one of his main supporters in the House of Lords. The history of their acquisition in the 1830s reveals some details of the social networks in Newcastle and beyond, and reflects changes during a decade when the town was beginning to take in its modern appearance, and old power structures lost their fight for survival.
