Abstract:
Querns were used from the Neolithic period onwards to grind cereals and produce flour, first for domestic use and later also more intensively in small shops and businesses and at centralised mills. This paper investigates quern development in the area around the modern-day towns of Cambridge and Godmanchester/Huntingdon from the Neolithic to the Roman period. It describes the types of stone that were used in the area for querns and their provenances as well as quern morphology, and it discusses how these changed throughout the later Iron Age and Roman periods.
