Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
This paper seeks to provide a reconstruction of Bishop Urban’s Cathedral Church of Llandaff, to determine the sources for the plan and the origin of the craftsmen responsible for the work, and to suggest why the building took on the appearance it did. There is no documentation to assist on these matters. Suggestions are made on the basis of careful comparative analysis of specific motifs which indicate particularly close associations with Hereford Cathedral, the great Benedictine Abbey (now Cathedral) of St Peter at Gloucester and allied work in Gloucestershire, and the work of Roger, Bishop of Salisbury from 1102 to 1139, especially in his extension of the early Norman Sarum Cathedral, and the church and former cloister of Malmesbury Abbey. |
