Abstract:
Ffynnon Sarah near Derwen is a Denbighshire well whose early history is unknown, but which was at one time a popular local medicinal well. It has in recent years been claimed as a holy well, with the name being interpreted as deriving from St Saeran (the saint of nearby Llanynys), but there is no evidence for this. Although it was abandoned in the early nineteenth century, some details of the medicinal use of the well were recorded before they were lost. These help us to understand how other similar wells throughout Wales would have been used. An especially interesting feature of Ffynnon Sarah is its link to the gypsies, with a possible gypsy origin for its name.
