This paper examines wheter the origin of Bedford as one element in a system of fortified urban burhs instigated by Offa throughout Mercia, as a defensive measure against Viking sea-borne attack, for certain aspects of the chronology and development of the historical landscape, and of the ecclesiastical topography of the northern and southern burhs of Bedford, in particular the topography of the town parishes and the physical relationship of these to their neighbours. | ||
